“Holmedell” address / Sat Nav is: 21e Duke’s Meadow, Hutton Roof, Penrith, CA11 0XW
Duke’s Meadow is just 4 miles from the village of Greystoke, 10 miles from Penrith and 14 miles from Keswick.
IMPORTANT NOTES TO MAP: The pin shows the location of “Holmedell”. Sadly this map not up to date and the satellite image on the Google Map is not recent, therefore they do not show the extended track nor the six new Lodges around Duke’s Pond.
Duke’s Meadow is located just outside of the Lake District National Park which means that “Holmedell” benefits from having the magnificent Lake District fells on its doorstep without the frenetic character of some of the more popular areas. The start and finish of some of Alfred Wainwrights’s well described walks are just 10 to 15 minutes drive from here and after a half hour or so you are in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. Ullswater lake is a short drive away as are Derwentwater and Lake Bassenthwaite.
Approaching from the north: leave the M6 motorway at Junction 41 (Wigton). At the roundabout take the fourth exit onto the B5305 to Wigton. Follow the B5305 for about 6 miles, through Hutton in the Forest and Unthank. Drive past the yellow road side advertisement sign for “Hats for Hire” and then turn off left to Lamonby. In the village of Lamonby, turn right. Just under 1 mile, at the crossroads go straight over, then turn immediately left into Duke’s Meadow.
Approaching from the south: leave the M6 motorway at Junction 40 (Penrith/Workington/Brough). At the roundabout take the first exit onto the A66. Just under 1 mile, at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on A66. Just over 1 mile, turn off right to Newbiggin. After 2 miles, at the T junction, turn left onto the B5288. Just over 1.5 miles arrive at the village of Greystoke and turn off right in the village centre. (Take care – the main road goes round to the left.) Once outside Greystoke village take the left fork signposted “Thanet Well” (“mountain cyclist” sitting on wall!) Follow the road, through the village of Johnby, for about 4 miles. At the crossroads, turn left and immediately left again into Duke’s Meadow.
From Penrith Town Centre: Leave Penrith on the B5288 signposted to Greystoke. Follow directions from Greystoke as above.
Once in Duke’s Meadow, follow the gravel track past Lodges on both sides of the road until you reach Duke’s Pond. Continue following the gravel track around the pond – “Holmedell” is the last Lodge.
